Cashel

The Rock of Cashel was originally the seat of the high Kings of Ireland and has a wealth of Celtic Art and architecture within its walls. It has been restored to it's former glory and is well worth a visit. There is a heritage center close by and traditional musicians regularly give free concerts for visitors to the restaurant and the craft shops.

The Castle consists of a  spectacular group of Medieval buildings set on an outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale including the 12th century round tower, High Cross and Romanesque Chapel, 13th century Gothic cathedral, 15th century Castle and the restored Hall of the Vicars Choral. Attractions include an audio-visual show and exhibitions. Access for visitors with disabilities by prior arrangement.

The Heritage Centre, located on Main Street, has a model of Cashel in the 1640’s. There is a multimedia presentation in several languages. The charters of Charles II (1663) and James II (1687) are on display here. Walking is the best way to discover Cashel at your leisure, the Georgian cathedral, Bolton library, city walls, learn the folklore.

Holycross, 15 minutes drive on the R660: Holycross Abbey was founded in 1168 by the King of Thomond of the Cistercian monks and is used today as the Catholic Parish Church. A relic of the true cross owned by the King was given to the Abbey.

Golden, 10 minutes drive on the N74: This village was built across the River Suir and is noted for trout and salmon.

Dundrum on the R505: Dundrum House Hotel and Leisure Complex has an 18 hole golf course, fishing and restaurant.

Forest Walks: N8 Ballydrehid Wood outside Cahir Heritage Town and on the N24, Bansha Wood on the Cahir-Tipperary road.

Cahir on the N8, 15 minutes drive: Cahir Castle was once the stronghold of the powerful Butler family, the castle retains its impressive keep, tower and much of its original defensive structure. It is one of Ireland's largest and best preserved castles. It is situated on a rocky island on the River Suir. The castle's attractions include an excellent audio-visual show which informs visitors of all the main sites of the area. The Swiss Cottage is a delightful Cottage built in the early 1800's by Richard Butler, first Earl of Glengall to a design by the famous Regency Architect John Nash. It's interior contains a graceful spiral staircase and some elegantly decorated rooms. The wallpaper in the salon manufactured by the Dofour Factory is one of the first commercially produced parisian wallpapers

Clonmel R668: 20 minutes drive. This is Co Tipperary's largest town and provides 18 hole golf, horse racing, greyhound racing, pony trekking, swimming, shopping, riverside walks and trout fishing.

The Tipperary County Museum in Parnell Street has a good quality display of 19th and 20th century items of political, industrial and civic interest. Clonmel Museum of Transport at Richmond Mill, Market Place (opposite Superquinn) - exhibits dating from the earliest days of motorised vehicles.

Cashel is centrally located.
